RACINE, WI — An 18-month long project to purchase and renovate a new location for Racine’s Habitat ReStore came to fruition on Friday, Jan. 10, as the store officially opened for business.
Its new location is at the former Piggly Wiggly in West Racine, 1101 Grove Avenue.
“Wow, guys, we’re here,” exclaimed Grant Buenger, Executive Director, Racine Habitat for Humanity, as he addressed a large crowd present for the store’s grand opening.
He was proud to list the many improvements of the new space including, more parking, better lighting, heat and bathrooms.
“We love this space and we are so proud of how it all came together, and we hope the rest of the community feels the same way too.” Buenger said.
Generous donation makes an impact
The move was made possible by a generous gift from the CNH Industrial Foundation.
“Today would not be possible without you,” Buegner said of CNH. “Your one million dollar donation towards the purchase and renovation if this space is significant and truly appreciated.”
He further explained that the CNH name will forever be on the outside wall of the building.
“Every donation received at the ReStore will come through the ‘CNH Donation Center,’” Buegner said.
Additionally, Buenger recognized Cree Lighting, who donated every light in the building, inside and out.
“It was a huge donation, we really appreciate all that you did,” he said.
Jed Haas, President of the Racine Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, spearheaded the entire project. Buenger praised Hass’ efforts on the project, as well as the ReStore staff, volunteers and loyal customers.
He also recognized architects Partners in Design and Katt Construction along with additional vendors who came up with creative, cost-saving measures, and offered discounts throughout theprocess; including Asphalt Contractors, Inc. and Jim’s Garage Door Service.
Susan Bowen is a lifelong resident of Racine and attended the grand opening with husband, Thom.
“I’m very excited about this new store…it’s a wonderful location, a great building, good parking, and it’s larger and brighter.” Bowen said they’ve been donating to ReStore for years. “This is the first place we think of when we want to donate something,” she said.
ReStore’s roots
It was 18 years ago when Lois Solberg, Racine, then a member of the Habitat Board of Directors, had the vision to start a ReStore in Racine – even though there was no money to support such a venture.
Solberg was determined, and through networking with local politician Jeff Neubauer, a state legislator at the time, she soon found out about an available space in the Kranz building on DeKoven Avenue.
Now, 18 years later, Solberg is thrilled to see ReStore thriving in a new and improved location.
“I’m just happy for the community…it couldn’t be better,” she said.
Looking ahead
After the official ribbon cutting, folks dispersed throughout the store to visit and shopkeeping the store’s registers busy for hours.
Buenger said he was “overwhelmed and grateful for the turnout. It feels really good to see the community respond and support and want to shop and want to show up and celebrate with us and see the finished product,” he said.
Ultimately, the new ReStore will allow for Habitat to support twice as many families with their first home as before, according to Buenger. Prior to 2025, ReStore was able to support about a house and a half each year. Going forward, he projects three houses a year.
“All monies spent at ReStore stay in Racine County. Every dollar spent at the ReStore goes directly to our housing program and helps that family purchase their first home,” Buenger said.
The community is invited to shop, to donate and/or to volunteer. The store’s inventory is ever changing but generally includes a variety of home furnishings, and building and remodeling supplies.

Lake-effect snow is expected to blanket communities along Lake Michigan Sunday night into Monday morning, with up to four or six inches possible in Racine and Kenosha.
Downtown Milwaukee could get an inch or two of snow because of its proximity to the lake, potentially creating headaches for Monday morning commuters. Snow is expected to begin after 6 p.m. Sunday.
"The accumulations you see, we're a lot more confident on what's going to happen on the eastern edge of the counties than on the western edge," National Weather Service meteorologist Benjamin Sheppard said.
Counties in northeastern Wisconsin could also get smaller amounts of snow, between a half-inch and two inches. Higher amounts are possible right along the lake.

That broad range accounts for the fact that some areas might not experience the snow band at all, explained Phil Kurimski, meteorologist at the NWS' Green Bay office.
"Whoever gets in the band will see heavier totals," he said.
Part of forecasting snowfall is computing a snow-to-liquid ratio, or how much water the snow is equivalent to. Milwaukee typically sees a 14-to-1 ratio, but tomorrow's snow could be up to 20-to-1, Sheppard said.
"The reason why lake-effect snow tends to produce some of those larger accumulations is it tends to have a higher ratio, meaning that snow is lighter and fluffier and occupies more space," he said.

Sheppard said it's important to drive carefully in these conditions, including leaving plenty of space between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.
If your community sees higher than expected accumulations, it could be a good idea to avoid commuting and work remotely if you have that option, he said.
"Once you travel west, out of that lake-effect zone, you find yourself in no trouble at all," Sheppard said.
Temperatures will remain chilly in Wisconsin this week, around the mid-20s, with gusty winds that could make it feel colder.

RACINE, Wis. - A Racine County Jail inmate is officially off of life support after his family donated his organs on Sunday, Jan. 5, and said their goodbyes.
The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department said the victim, 35-year-old Joseph Lee, was pronounced dead on New Year's Day. Now, his family says they are fighting for justice and transparency.
Kenosha County investigators on Friday recommended a charge of first-degree intentional homicide for the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Davonte Carraway.

"I’m his mother, I’m not supposed to be burying him," Lee’s mother, Glora Dugar, said. "It wasn’t right, it’s not right."
Investigators said Carraway attacked Lee while in the Racine County Jail's day room on Tuesday afternoon. Shortly after, a correctional officer finished a safety and security check. It was only on the next security check that the correctional officer found the victim and then began lifesaving attempts.
"I can’t do it," Lee’s oldest brother, Carl Grayson, said.
Although the words are hard to express, the message is clear.

"I just need justice to happen," Lee’s brother Terrance Grayson said. "I got to console my mother, I got to hold her through this."
The Racine County Sheriff's Office said the attack lasted less than a minute and no other inmates activated emergency buttons. But Lee's family said the correctional officers should have been more vigilant.

A Racine man jailed in a pending attempted homicide case is now suspected of attacking a fellow inmate on Dec. 31, leaving the victim on life support.
Lee's family's attorney said the attack left him brain-dead in the hospital.
"They deserve to know what happened, how it happened," attorney B’Ivory LaMarr said. "This is not about pushing a button or the failure to push a button by inmates, you are paid to do a job and we are here today because you failed to do so."

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
The Racine County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to FOX6 News for comment.
Attorneys don't believe there was a relationship between Lee and Carraway.
LaMarr said the next steps would be to file open records requests to try to obtain more information on what happened, and said he would ask the Racine County Sheriff's Office to reach out to them to set up some sort of meeting with the family.

2. Regency Mall Santa
Santa Claus will be back at the Regency Mall starting on Nov. 29. Walk-ups are welcome but reservations are also an option and can be made online here.
Santa will be hearing from area kids and available for photo opportunities between 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Each day, Santa takes a break from 3 to 4 p.m.
Santa will have special hours on Dec. 23 and 24. On Dec. 23, he will be available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a break from 3 to 4 p.m., and on Dec. 24 he will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a break from 1 to 2 p.m.

4. Pleasant Prairie Premium Outlets Santa
Santa Claus will be on hand at the family fun days at the Pleasant Prairie Premium Outlets in Pleasant Prairie. The event will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Dec. 2 through Dec. 9 at the outlets, 11211 120th Ave., Suite 19A, Pleasant Prairie. Santa will be strolling around the center for photos as well Lola Bard Carolers. The Grinch and his Elves will also be there.
5. Ride With Santa on a Giant Sleigh
The Christmas Carnival of Lights, at 8425 WI-38, Caledonia, is offering rides on a giant sleigh with Santa on Sundays and Mondays this holiday season. Tickets for a sleigh ride include a chance to take a photo with Santa and are available online. The festival of lights also has a workshop on its grounds where Santa will be hanging out, and will be available to meet with area kids.
